What does Merdeka mean?
Merdeka is the Malay word meaning independence or freedom. The history of how our country, Malaysia got our independence is well known. Sarawak, Sabah and Singapore merged in 1963 and together with states of Malaysia and North Borneo formed Malaysia. Sarawak and Sabah also gained their independence on the 31 August 1963. Therefore, Merdeka is a significant date throughout Malaysia.
Why do we celebrate Merdeka?
Merdeka day is a national day of Malaysia commemorating the independence of the Federation of Malaya from British colonial rule. We celebrate Merdeka to remember the efforts for independence our leaders fought for in the negotiations with the British in London. Now, we are able to celebrate Merdeka in remembrance of our independence that we have gained.
Who started Merdeka?
The effort for independence was spearheaded by Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, the first Prime Minister of Malaysia. Together with Tun Dato Sri Tan Cheng Lock and Tun V.T Sambanthan, they gained independence from the British Empire. When it was decided, the official proclamation of independence was made on 31 August 1957 at the Stadium Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur
When is Merdeka?
Referring to the previous question, Merdeka is celebrated proudly in Malaysia on the 31 August every year. Everyone is happy because we all have holidays! Hip hip hooray!
How do we celebrate Merdeka?
Merdeka is proudly celebrated in the whole of Malaysia. There will be parties, open houses, food and fireworks! Oh yes! Fireworks!! Anyway, everyone and anyone in Malaysia can celebrate together as one happy family. All kinds of race and religion will be celebrating this exciting occasion. There will also be a parade at Dataran Merdeka and crowds of people will assemble there and go wild waving the national flag.
Where do we celebrate Merdeka?
Merdeka is of course celebrated in Malaysia where we will have fun and enjoy the freedom we rightfully deserve. Merdeka can be celebrated any way and anywhere. Malaysians can have parties and open houses to celebrate Merdeka. But, the parade is not something to be missed so everyone will be watching and waving the national flag with pride.
What does Merdeka mean to me?
Merdeka is a joyous celebration. I definitely feel proud and relieved to know that my country has gained it's own independence. Now, we can almost do everything we want. I was told that without independence, Malaysians couldn't do what they wanted like own their own television and so on so forth. But, it may just be one of my grandmother's stories. Merdeka probrably means a lot not only to me but also to everyone in Malaysia.
